In Vitro Antimicrobial Activity Screening of Xylaria Hypoxylon

BACKGROUND Fungi have a potential of using both as nutritive and medicinal food stuff. Because of containing several therapeutic agents, they are reported to be used for hundreds of years to treat several diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. The aim of this study is to determine the in vitro antimicrobial activity of Xylaria hypoxylon, which were collected from Yomra, Trab...

Screen for agents that induce autolysis in Bacillus subtilis.

The growing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant infections underscores the need to discover new antibiotics and to use them with maximum effectiveness. In response to these needs, we describe a screening protocol for the discovery of autolysis-inducing agents that uses two Bacillus subtilis reporter strains, SH-536 and BAU-102. To screen chemical libraries, autolysis-inducing agents were first i...

A simple model host for identifying Gram-positive virulence factors.

We demonstrate the use of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a facile and inexpensive model host for several Gram-positive human bacterial pathogens. Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus, but not Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecium, or Streptococcus pyogenes, kill adult C. elegans. Focusing our studies on the enterococcal species, we found that both...

Active-site and membrane topology of the DD-peptidase/penicillin-binding protein no. 6 of Enterococcus hirae (Streptococcus faecium) A.T.C.C. 9790.

The membrane-bound 43,000-Mr penicillin-binding protein no. 6 (PBP6) of Enterococcus hirae consists of a 30,000-Mr DD-peptidase/penicillin-binding domain and a approximately 130-residue C-terminal appendage. Removal of this appendage by trypsin proteolysis has no marked effect on the catalytic activity and penicillin-binding capacity of the PBP. Anchorage of the PBP in the membrane appears to b...

Spoilage and Pathogenic Bacteria Isolated from Two Types of Portuguese Dry Smoked Sausages after Shelf-life Period in Modified Atmosphere Package

Members of the bacterial population of two types of Portuguese dry smoked sausages (chouriços) were identified and characterized. A total of 77 isolates were recovered from chouriços type Alentejano and Ribatejano, after 120 days at 20 ± 5 oC in modified atmosphere package (55 % N2/45 % CO2) using non-selective and selective media. Based on phenotypic (cell morphology and fermentation profile) ...
